Ladies & Gentlemen, introducing my first blog

I finally did it… I did what I have been advising clients for almost 10 years- the importance of having a syndicated, branded online presence with a website, social media platforms and drum roll… a blog!

You might have figured by my branding that I am either a Madonna fan or a materialistic, PR bunny. Truth be told, yes, despite living in a Commonwealth country, I identify Madonna as the reigning Queen. And as for the materialistic PR bunny? Eating left over Easter eggs in my fluffy white bed socks are as bunny I as get of late- I am typing this blog with an overgrown pink & gold manicure in a 16-year-old concert t-shirt and sweat pants whilst my favourite essential oil blend neutralises the air of uncertainty. I’ll take all the therapeutic assistance available at this point.

Our material world is on pause. No concerts. No celebrations. No holidays. No events. Coronavirus has abruptly pulled the hand brake on life as we knew it. For many, our livelihoods are on pause too. Gone are my days of dispensing a production line of event run sheets and guest lists on a Friday afternoon. Now my eye twitches with “now what?” outbursts at every breaking news press conference live from Parliament House. As we continue to experience, our choices are ever-changing and limited. Coronavirus forces us to reprioritise, with our health being our main focus.

I’ve always worked in the entertainment and PR realm where playing the role of a Material Girl has progressed. It’s a contradicting beast- glamorous, yet superficial. Fast-paced whilst exhausting. Fun, yet confronting. I am still learning the ropes and the rise of social media from a once traditional PR/ media standpoint continues to challenge even the most fearless material girl. Whether we like it or not, we are living in a material world and my key challenge, has been learning to flick that switch on and off. And boy, do I now have the time on my hands to master the balance not to mention doing for myself, what I have been doing for my clients.

When the initial government regulations were unfolding, it felt Titanic-like. And P.S Scomo, the 3pm iceberg-ahead changes on a Friday afternoon would have been appreciated even at 9am, to give us enough time to get our tape measures and floor plans out to comprehend the one person every however many square meters rule, especially for events the next day that expected hundreds of patrons. Whether we worked in it or took part in it, no matter what side of the counter, stage or bar we were on, we watched the demise of our hospitality and events industry. It is now our call of duty to protect our community and still make a living.

I have been on a schedule since my university days. I come from a world of schedules, deadlines and timing and now live in a world of open- ended uncertainty. Having said that, it’s time to readapt as a material boy or girl should!

One of my work besties and I have partnered up with one hell of an entrepreneurial spark to launch my website and re-branded strategy. I was not falling into the trap of TikTok (look, I may have made an account called materialgirlpr) If I had time to think about what day of the week it was, then I had time to create my website with a like-minded bestie (I alternate between calling her bitch or doll- are they even your friend if you use their real name?) It’s been something I hadn’t made the time to do and just like that, I am forced with that sought-after time that always seemed to elude me. It’s not quite the same when you are forced into something, but having someone to creatively work with and feed off during these not so fun times, has made all the difference, especially when you need a virtual kick in your pilates aspiring ass.

My website and blog launch has been an opportunity to be creative, reflective, focused and innovative in a foreign world to me, where it’s easy to fall into what I call “the miserable bat cave.” And don’t get me wrong, I find myself in that quarantined cave from time to time, although Bruce Wayne is no where to be found, and Christian Bale or Ben Affleck would make it less miserable. I must say, the wifi is pretty good in the bat cave.

I am looking forward to sharing my experiences, connecting with my long-time clients and supporters and offering my expertise to inspire the dreamers, the hibernators and the hustling entrepreneurs. And if I can’t do any of the above, well, I hope I will at least entertain you.

Stay safe & be patient,

Nicole x
